My name is Matthew Kew and I am currently a student at the University of Sheffield reading Politics and Philosophy. Although I take great interest in my course, pursuing a career in motorsport journalism has been my intention since a young age. So I thought what better way to give my interest in Formula 1 a platform while balancing my academic studies than my own website? So in February of 2015 I finally fired up my laptop with the intention of posting weekly articles, and so it began.

I have enjoyed all things four wheels from a young age. My parents used to take my brother and I to Rockingham Motor Speedway to watch the ‘Days of Thunder’ ASCAR racing series every couple of months or so. Incidentally, this is where we saw Ben Collins crowned champion and then later become Top Gear’s Stig. This was my first taste of racing, and planted the seed of my interest in motorsport.

From there it is hard to pinpoint a specific point where I started to watch Formula 1 religiously. I remember Button’s fantastic 2nd place at Monaco in 2004 and the calamitous 2005 Indianapolis Grand Prix in which only 6 cars started as early encounters with the sport.  And then came my first experience of an F1 car. I once again was at Rockingham for an unsuspecting MG and Rover track day with a friend and her dad, when Fifth Gear were filming a Williams FW27 vs. an E60 M5. I can still remember the sound of the roaring V10, even if I didn’t appreciate it at the time.

I suppose from then on my interest was captured. The noise, the speed, racing and off track drama all captivated a young boy. From then on I began to appreciate the other aspects of racing, such as strategy, car design and the regulations. This has filtered down into an interest in WRC, BTCC and Formula E all of which I follow closely. But my purest and deepest interest has always remained Formula 1. So much so that alongside my A-levels I signed up to write a 5,000 word assignment on the sport and my favourite driver, entitled “Why was the Death of Ayrton Senna so Controversial?”- This will be uploaded during the summer break. And now that I can drive, I have been to Silverstone for the last two years, if only for the Young Drivers’ Test and then this summer for Qualifying and although the racing may be under close scrutiny, it has done nothing to dampen my passion.

However there have been some changes. As I have begun to write impartially on each event I find myself without any outright favourite driver or constructor at present. I could single out Button, Ricciardo and Nasr- having followed the Brazilian through the junior formulas. But it does help to objectively review each driver’s performance when I have no strong allegiance to one in particular.

And that brings us up to where we are now. Thank you for your support and stick around to see how it grows from here.
